About the English Literature and Language Undergraduate Program
The Department of English Language and Literature at Istanbul Topkapi University teaches literature written in English from all periods and places and awards B.A. degree in literature. We are a department with a broad view of the discipline. We understand "literature" to mean written production in a variety of forms and genres, and its study to include the ways in which texts have been produced and read. Our methods of teaching include close reading, theoretical and cultural analysis, and applications of critical theory organized in the form of lectures, class discussions, one-to-one consultation and supervision.
Our goal in our lectures is to improve our students’ critical and analytical skills in a manner that responds to the pressing challenges of our time. To achieve this goal, we introduce them to creative perspectives reflected by literary texts and help them discover rich diversity of ideas in these texts.
Professors in our department cover British and American literatures, ranging from the medieval era to the present including contemporary literature, science fiction, Gothic, and posthumanism. They provide intensive mentoring to students in the classroom and in office hours. Our department further hosts lecture series and conferences about particular fields of literary and critical studies. Our students pursue careers in education, publishing, editing, media, communication, and the arts, or go on to further study in graduate and professional schools.
